Hobby: The Mystical Stag of Arborioch

This is a model that I've wanted to make for a long time, particularly since watching Princess Mononoke. I really enjoy the idea of pulling an otherwise benign model of a deer into something mystical or incredibly powerful.  I think in an era of the hobby where miniatures companies are making some truly impressive and titanic miniatures, its nice to have something that can represent great power in an otherwise subtle package.

This is a Stag model from the Dungeons and Dragons line of 'pre-primed' miniatures, and was picked up at one of the local LGS for a few dollars. I think of it as either a potent boss/npc for TTRPG's or as a hero for Dragons Rampant.

Hobby: Hermetic Wizard

This strange little mini is from the excellent Beastarium Games, it was printed by Chris 'The Fabricator' for me, as Im a sucker for strange Blanchian/Dark Souls style things. This was part of a purposed mini exchange for the holidays in the club. I chose to make him a little brighter, color pallet wise, as I think of him like a Radaghast the Brown style eccentric. I have a whole little adventuring set from this company, and they support their monthly releases with 5th edition DnD stat blocks and an adventure path which I think is really interesting. A link to Beastarium's website is below!

Hobby: Dwarven Hero

While myself and Sophie were down visitng Sippin' on Paint Water's author Chris, we stopped into one of the local gaming stores and I found this lovely little dwarf figure for about $5, which was a steal. The figure was resin printed by the shop with a commercial license and packed in a blister. Which is a model i'd love to see more LGS start, it's a great way to get more of the burdgeoning 3D designers out and visible to the world, and with the materials and production cost being so low, allows for a deeply diminished price point on the figure itself.

Sadly, the original designer of this character was not listed on the blister. But in doing some research I found that this is 'Luther the King' from Miniatures of Madness (LINK)

He was a lot of fun to work on.  Maybe i'll get a few other beardy fellows as well to help him on his no doubt mighty deeds.

A Patreon & Wiki !

Well, the past few months have been rather exciting for me as we have rapidly closed in on some of our goals at work in the conservation lab, and more importantly for you fine folks reading here, we have been hard at work in Grey Mountain Gaming getting multiple facets of our club's infrastructure and background admin off the ground.  I have contracts with both Wesley Durham and Layla Hill to work on art for Vahland and for the group's wider narrative interests, both of whom are local artists from the same art college as myself. I have the first prototype T-Shirt for the group, we have set up a patreon (link below) and have started reformatting the wiki for my Vahland sector (the place where Jornath is taking place) so that those interested in reading about the wider context of our games can enjoy the full breadth of nerd-lore on offer. I hope you are as enthusiastic as I am, and I hope to see you around.

Please consider supporting our club, and the Jornathii War Effort on Patreon!

If you are interested in reading more about our lore click here, more is being added all the time!

Terican PDF move into a contested landing zone against perfidious Tyranid bioforms, in a skirmish scenario at the January Gamesday

Above is the first draft of the club T-shirt, I'd like to explore some other fabric and design choices before placing the shirts up for sale to interested parties, and I can talk at length about the exact application of funds spent for club merchandise and membership if there is interest.

Our February Games Day is upcoming, to allow members to have hobby time for the finale for the first arc of the 4th Tyrannic War campaign set on Terico Prime, we will be hosting an open day for February, all are welcome to bring Age of Sigmar, 30/40k, Necromunda, Mordhiem, Grimdark Future, Osprey Games or any other rules set or force of interest, lunch, terrain and minis will be present at the venue disclosed to members.

Hobby: Midland Bandits #1

A few old Wargames Factory Viking Huscarls with pieces from the Frostgrave Cultists added on, these friendly fellows are the first in a wave of shield-bearing infantry to accompany my Knights of the Feast in games of Dragons Rampant.  For their base, I want to get some tall grass and meadow flowers with likely a dark brown earth color like Stirland Battlemire, with small rocks to break things up visually.

Hobby: Order of Purest Sun

We've been dabbling for a little while now with Dragons Rampant, which is an excellent ruleset from Osprey Publishing.  Its a generic fantasy toolkit, and I often see the Warhammer Fantasy armies of yore fielded once again under its rules. Its very balanced and still quite flexible with a selection of fantastical abilities and attributes to add onto a list of core unit profiles to tailor units to meet your ideas.

Being as I loved the old world of Warhammer Fantasy, and that I felt that many of the Fantasy miniatures I had are more modern and would fit better into my ideas for Age of Sigmar. I picked up some more old school hand sculpted human fantasy figures from some third party sites. The primary one being EOE ORBIS  aka. Blacktree Miniatures.

My intention is for these brave men at arms to stand sentinel against my Warriors of Chaos army, that I inherited from Chris some time ago now, and which is comprised nearly entirely of early plastic warriors from 5th Edition WFB.

A shot of the two (nearly) complete units for the Empire. A unit of Ostermark State Troops, and a small unit of lesser knights

Synn: Synntapolis

Long before the Age of Sigmar, within the shadow realm of Ulgu, there resided a mighty unity of free cities. Foremost among these great burgs was Synntapolis, from which silvered hosts of Men, Aelves, and Duardin did march in defiance of the machinations of the damned pantheon. and within which was erected a grand Realmgate that the light of the god-king and his court might illuminate the shifting mists of this bleakest of realms, and through which armies of order might march to do battle with the enemies of sanity and of life.

The Many Crested King, Daemon Regent, and fell mercenary general of the twisted god's undivided hosts hungered after this Light of Ulgu, and knew he might gain much glory with its sundering and he did make war upon its blessed defenders. When at the Battle of Outer Krastahl, and the Damnation of Lantern's Mount the hosts of darkness shatter the lines of the faithful, there was much lamentation within the streets of Sigmar's city, which was amplified when siege was laid upon Synntapolis.
As the Age of Chaos did descend upon the realms, and light waned in power against the dark, blessed Sigmar found, in his unquestioned dedication, that a host of the Stormcast Eternals could be dispatched through the Realmgate to reinforce the beleaguered defenders.

Serried ranks of silver helms, speartip, and arrow were presented to the foe, bolstered by the hammer of the god-king the men of the defiant city smote the denizens of the realm of madness, time and again. For a generation, the forces of order stood in defiance, but at long last, the thrice times thrice-cursed lord of the host of evil did stand before the gates of Synntapolis and bellow a challenge to the master of the Stormcast to meet in single combat to decide in honorable combat the fate of the great city. Vandyor Cometborn, Lord Castellant of the host answered the call, and speaketh these words in the reception of the daemon lord's challenge.

"Verily do I Vandyor Cometborn, servant of the Lord of the Realms, meet thine challenge. I make in a compact with thee, and with thine lieutenants, that upon thy death, the host which thou hast assembled upon this plane in defiance of the laws of the rightful, will disperse and never again set upon the places touched with the blessed light of my master"

In agreeance, the Many Crested King merely nodded, and battle betwixt the lords was joined. great fissures split the ground and the skies wept with thick ichor at the terrible forces loosed upon the realm. Then, as the noble Cometborn did make to strike a terrible and closing blow upon the Many Crested King, the daemon revealed its treachery, with a word it sent forth its minions and pulled the Lord Cometborn beneath a tide of fecund bodies. With their master fallen in treachery the defenders reeled, and the forces of Chaos broke the walls. Battle was joined in tumult unmatched within the streets of Synntapolis, and for a fortnight the free peoples held the tide of evil at bay.

Final defiance was given in the dawning hours of the final day, in the shade of the grand realmgate, twenty times did the waves of madness break upon the shields of the faithful and twenty times the tide was repulsed in glory. when the twenty-first came it was a lone Knight Questor, whose name has since been lost that broke the loadstone of the realmgate, even as arrows pierced his favored body, and his martyrs' blood flowed on sanctified ground. Such was the tumult of energies unleashed, stained by the lifeblood of a murdered hero that Synntapolis entire was swallowed by the winds of magic, veiled by Ulgu itself, as is its way, until such time as Ulgu permitted its discovery.

It is said, that the Many Crested King screams in rage still, atop a mountain of priceless relics at his failure to deliver the blessed city to his masters.  Some say you might hear them still borne upon the mists to this very day.

AoS: The Unmooring of County Ledzuit

The County Ledzuit was watched over by the family Henrich for over two centuries, in that time the county has seen a great deal, in 2084 beast tribes fleeing the scouring of the Sun Knights reaved through the coutryside, and in 2131 the lesser necromancer Yertari Ov had her occult rituals thwarted by an assembled party of Ledzuit militia and footmen of House Henrich.

Nothing in its history would prepare the county for the strange event, recalled by later historians as the Unmooring.

Investigation of Coll's Manor

It would begin with an unexplained forest blaze coming from the direction of Coll's Manor, a secluded estate, its Lord Barthe was singularly known as especially peculiar and reclusive, living for many years without incoming revenue off the bequeathed wealth of his deceased father. He had only a handful of working farmers and a pitiful assortment of roving livestock. Which is all to say that he was a recluse, and not well liked. Regardless, it was the responsibility of the Henrich's guard to look after all the people of the land and Barthe is nobility after all.

The footmen, upon treading through the blackened and smoke wreathed remains of the fallen tree trunks came upon the blasted open shell of the Manor house.  A singular figure stood silhouetted by the still burning fires of the interior. Perhaps once it was the eponymous Lord Barthe,  now what stood before the handful of footmen was a malformed ghoul of weeping flesh and dripping muscle, crowned with a blasphemous helm of bone. Spotting the footmen the creature shambled forth, clutching an unnatural mace, which pained the eye to look upon for its otherworldly origin.  Unsheathing their weapons, the footmen moved to defend themselves, as the monster lumbered into striking range.  In a burst of impossible vigor, the thing lunged at them, bringing its mace below the guard of Jerik, smashing into his torso.  As the flesh began to sag and drip from the screaming footmen his comrades descended upon the thing, hacking, and stabbing with terrified abandon.

Even with the creature lying in a pulpy mulch of gore, a rasping wet breathing could still be heard. The two remaining footmen breathed frantically with the rush of adrenaline that terror had brought them. Before the high could leave them they saw the other shapes in the trees, dozens, or possibly more smoke veiled figures limped silently towards the manor.  The footmen fled back to their masters in House Henrich, to bring word of what they had encountered.

Battle of Fannhollow

As the might of House Henrich gathered, reports filtered in from around the county. Gibbering bands of the unquiet dead and maddening shoggoths of hateful flesh stalked the land as the impossible harbingers of a nightmare invasion.

With greater numbers and the lords roused, the guardians of sanity lent themselves to the defense of the land. The footmen and militia under Lord Henrich himself found battle within the still burning ruins of Fannhollow village, a particularly grotesque monster and his retinue of fleshy pus weeping knights met the men of house Henrich along the stream on the southern edge of the ville.

With immense effort the creatures were battered down, each flesh thing taking dozens of grievous wounds to succumb to the damage. The unnatural leader of the force, in particular, was seemingly immune to harm, while using a blade of fused spinal vertebrae to scythe down any that stood against it.

At the height of the fighting, as one, the creatures turned and simply withdrew from the field, as if called as one by a greater will to another more pressing concern. Lord Henrich marshaled his surviving men, and taking his most trusted personal guard with him, gave chase to the fleeing monsters, sending the rest of his retinue to gather as many additional fighting men as could be found.

Ascent to the Ebon Pyramid

For hours the men of Henrich's household guard tracked the creatures through the woodland. Though night should have long since fallen, the woods were lit by a persistent baleful twilight. The origin of this light and indeed the source of the creatures themselves was at last revealed to the men of County Ledzuit.  A sinister obsidian pyramid stood at the center of a clearing surrounded by esoteric statuary, a ragged portal shone above the structure, weeping corposant and ichor, the doorway spat forth more of the horrors.  A pitched battle was already raging around the nightmare portal, barbaric knights of an unknown alignment hacked into the throng of creatures, each one of the armored warriors chanted a hymnal that burned the ears and made the skin itch with the sound of the un-words.

Resolute to bring an end to the situation, Henrich and his footmen move into the pitched fighting. Banking on sword and shield to subdue the portal's unholy influence.

In moments, the outcome of the fighting would be moved into certainty, the men of Ledzuit laid low a half dozen of the revenant creatures and came within reach of the chanting knights who were still crowded by a throng of the monstrous entities. As the Lord Henrich ordered his forces to support the strange men, an overwhelming stench of ozone flooded out from the weeping portal. Several of the men around the Lord suddenly dropped their weaponry and clutched their heads or fell to the ground screaming in total agony. In horror Lord Henrich watched as his men's skin melted away revealing a bloody goosepimpled hide, twisting spurs of bone reached forth from the skulls of the dying men.  Still screaming in agonized death, towering bloodsoaked monstrosities stood up from a pile of flayed skin.

In desperation, the surviving men crowded around their lord, resolved to die standing against the horrors. To their surprise, the bloody creatures turned away from them descending upon the twisted flesh monsters besieging the strange knights. In short order, the blood monsters defeated the revenants, and after a guttural order from one of the strange knights, they bounded up the black pyramid and into the portal. Silence fell across the clearing, the only warriors still standing on the grisly field were humans. The largest of the knights turned towards the huddled knot of Henrich's footmen, and held up his sword in salute. Before he and his attendant warriors followed the blood creatures into the portal.

After the last of the knights had entered the portal, the tear in reality snapped shut with a wet sucking noise, that made all in the vicinity dizzy and nauseous. None of the creatures have been seen since, nor any of the knights despite through investigations by members of the Collogia Aracanis. The only clue was found by investigators in the charred remnants of the Coll Manor, an aged leather bound book untouched by the flames, with an odd tri-lobed symbol embroidered on its cover. The interior filled with barely conceivable word forms, only one word was discernable to those that viewed it, a phlegmy unpleasant word...

Hobby: Fae Enchantress

Hello everyone! I'm hard at work on a wealth of new Jornath content that will help to contextualize the latest rather extreme lore update for the campaign and bring it more firmly into the realm of realistic feasibility. In the meantime, here is a sampling of the latest commission work that I've had the pleasure of doing. For another member of the Age of Sigmar league, I had the enormous good luck to paint a Bretonnian Fae Enchantress, and create a flight base for an already painted Pegasus Knight. I hope you enjoy!

The Doom of Taggertburg

slamboart.jpg

Some time ago now I created a booklet to help encourage some other local gamers to get into the Age of Sigmar system. It is primarily intended to be a single-player experience, teaching you the system by having you move through a branching campaign as the eponymous "hero" Slambo, while slowly building up a Chaos Warband. It's themed and designed to closely resemble the look and feel of the classic 80's books, that founded Warhammer Fantasy. Hopefully, I created a document that will encourage you to dig up some old sword and sorcery figures to do battle once more.

Profiles for all the non-optional units both antagonist and friendly are provided in the back of the document. While the rules for Age of Sigmar are not included, I have provided a link below along with the link to the Campaign book.
I'd love to know what you think of the Doom of Taggertburg; if you'd like to see changes or if you'd like me to create one for different forces or even for Warhammer 40,000 definitely let me know what you think in the comments below!

AoS: A Day of Battles

A bit of a deviation today I bring you some delightful Age of Sigmar battles, A league of friends, some starting into the hobby for the first time, some returning after an extended hiatus have all decided to kick off a lovely little league.

We are starting from the ground up in force creation with the Skirmish expansion, and moving from there to Path to Glory and upwards into full matched-play tiers.

On the Roster as I remember things we have

Myself - Stormcast Eternals + Freeguild
Evan - Seraphon
Owen - Undivided Daemons
Adrianna - Wanderers
Ben - Brettonians
Mark - Ironjaws
JD - Skaven and Warriors of Chaos
John - Skaven and Warriors of Chaos

First Table, we see Owen and Ben matching off over an objectives rush game. The Bret's are unsuprisingly going for a heavy cavalry approach, which will go on to serve them very well. Owen opting for a hearty battleline of Nurgle's grandchildren.

The Battle was a vicious affair which saw things come down towards the end in terms of objectives capturing. Sadly for Owen in this instance the Brets were simply able to out pace him to many of the objectives and snatch them up before he could get there.

On the other table we have Adrianna and Evan squaring off in an Assassination mission. Sadly for Evan,  whose Oldblood would very much have preferred to actually do something.

The battle was typified by the Elves skirting around the zone, which the Lizardmen's Oldblood was unable to leave and raining accurate arrow fire down onto his troops. The casualty count was high amoungst the seraphon warriors but the reptilians sold their lives dearly to allow for the Oldblood to board his freshly arrived escape pteradactyl and claim victory.

Next round I set up  against Evan's Seraphon in a Vortex mission, which sadly saw the Oldblood yet again restricted to a tiny zone from which he was unable to move for the games duration.

The game was absolutely a slugfest, with two battlelines of hefty core infantry choices slamming into one another at a chokepoint on the battlefield. My forces did eventually break the line and move to assail the Oldblood, but it proved to be too late, only wounding the tenacious lizardman before games end.

On the other table Adrianna and Ben set up for their game with an "lost in the mist" style deployment which saw much of the forces from both the Brets and the Elves scattered across the table in disspirate pockets.

unfortunately for the elves, the speed of the enemies cavalry and their heavy hitting impact made for a short game as the elves were mostly unable to bring any signifigant shooting to bear on single targets before they made impact on yet another band of elven archers

To round off the day, we started up a multi-player game with everyone in attendance. The only signifigant change is Owen brought out the Hounds of Khrone to play instead of the Nurgle Battleline from his first game.

I ended up having to bow out early from the game but from what accounts I heard, the Brettonnians and the Khornate daemons exhausted themselves in the city, the Khorne daemons coming out the stronger, while in the outskirts the Lizardmen butchered the Elves and sweeped into the city to decimate the surviving Khrone daemons. (That Oldblood sure is one to watch!)

So that wraps up my initial coverage of the league, definitely stay tuned for more fantasy related content in the future! Thanks for reading everyone
