Hobby: 30k Ultramarines Rhino

Photos from when I finished up my first 30k Rhino. My Horus Heresy Ultras are mostly composed of Marine kits left over from the olden days of 4th and 5th edition that I've scrapped together into something I find compelling for a list. It's actually been an age since I've worked on a Rhino, and I've been pretty pleased with how well it and the rest of the Ultramarines have turned out so far.  I broke the typical codex standard here by using a white accent on the doors and front of the chassis. Hopefully Guilliman can find it in his hearts to forgive me not following his book, I've never really enjoyed having marine vehicles all in one color, I think even after highlighting it can come off a little flat.

But overall, I'm quite pleased with the final outcome on this one here. I'll show off some more of the Ultramarines for 30k and maybe include some of the lore for them in a little while.

Thank you for reading!

Hobby: Dwarven Hero

While myself and Sophie were down visitng Sippin' on Paint Water's author Chris, we stopped into one of the local gaming stores and I found this lovely little dwarf figure for about $5, which was a steal. The figure was resin printed by the shop with a commercial license and packed in a blister. Which is a model i'd love to see more LGS start, it's a great way to get more of the burdgeoning 3D designers out and visible to the world, and with the materials and production cost being so low, allows for a deeply diminished price point on the figure itself.

Sadly, the original designer of this character was not listed on the blister. But in doing some research I found that this is 'Luther the King' from Miniatures of Madness (LINK)

He was a lot of fun to work on.  Maybe i'll get a few other beardy fellows as well to help him on his no doubt mighty deeds.

Thanks for reading!

Pride of Lions Playtesting: Hobgoblins of The Jade Flame

David McBride from Splintered Light a producer of 15mm scale fantasy miniatures (LINK) is working on the 2nd Edition of his fantasy battles game Pride of Lions, offering a selection of army bundles for those interested in participating in the Playtesting for the game. These armies provide a mixture of very interesting figures and at 15mm scale represent a very approachable and interesting hobby project.

The game is played on 2x2 foot squares and focuses primarily on the aftermath of a magical apocalypse in a fantastical world, where the worst excesses of warlocks and other magic users has scoured the traditional fantasy world and left the barbaric tribes of monsters which most of us will recognize (trolls, orcs, beastmen etc) to inherit the remains, not all of the 'civilized' peoples are gone but as mentioned, are greatly depleted in scope and capability. I thought this was a particularly interesting setting and I needed to take a hiatus from 40k for a bit, thus I decided to participate in this playtest.

I picked up 3 warbands,  those being Hobgoblins, Black Root Bog, and Pig-Faced Orcs, in addition to these warbands I wanted to work on 2x2 boards specific to each one's native territory.  The first of the warbands that I opened up was the Hobgoblins, which included a unit of firey hellhounds, human barbarian infantry, and monstrous flame giants to accompany the metal-clad lines of hand weapon/shield warriors and spear-armed infantrymen. The hobgoblins and their attendant allies and creatures represented one of the more well-equipped and well-armed warbands in the game and I felt that as a result, they must have a territory appropriate to supply this wargear.  I settled on a desecrated Dwarven hold as their territory and went with a simple dwarf icon in the center of a stonework grid.

An admittedly simple motif, but one that I hope to use in other games and other scales as well.

Playing around with some potential scatter and Hobgoblin paint schemes this evening. My plan is give the dwarven pillar a similar baleflame green cast as the burning skull held by the wizard. Given the decisive lack of foilage in dwarf mountain-homes, clusters cursed rune stones felt like an interesting alternative to provide scatter for the board.

Stay tuned for more of Warhammer 40,000's narrative battle reports with Part 3 of the Hamlis Valley Campaign, and for other updates on the Pride of Lions Playtest.

Vahland: Haustic Belief and The Cadmusians

The Hausticans and Haustic Belief : Inside the Vahland sub-sector there are a number of divergent Imperial belief structures tolerated by the Ecclessiarchy. One of the most popular, particularly on the eastern edges of the Urient Sub Sector and Southern stretches of the Kalomyr sub is Hausticanism or Haustic Belief which holds a polytheist view of the Emperor. Essentially viewing the roles of the Emperor's life as separate divine entities manifesting through the singular vision of the Emperor as godhead. Thusly, his Astartes, and Primarchs represent divine fragments of the God-Emperor. There is a popular series of readings meant to complement the Leticio Divinitatus, called the Haustic Cantos which ascribe many of the sub-faiths particular practices and Belief structures in long-form poems in the Drenjion Style favored by many writers in the late M.40 Vahland Sector.

The Cadmusians: At the fall of Ankou, Shield Captain Cadmus of the Akhelian Shield fell in glory at the Stand in the High Civitans Palace. Two years later, at the Liberation of Ankou by the 3290th AG, his remains were recovered from the field of his death, untouched and barely decayed from his gene forged birth his body had evidently become a bad omen for the greenskins during their occupation of the moon. Building on his legend the Civilian administration of Jornath rechristened Ankou as Cadmus' Rest, and reappropriated supplementary control of the world from the Cult Mechanicus to the Ecclessiarchy, specifically Cardinal Emanuel Telly, who dabbled frequently with Haustic Belief. Tully alongside several members of the Jornathii Planetary Elite, developed the Cadmusian Canto, an embellished hagiographic retelling of the Ankou War, canonizing Cadmus in the Haustic Belief structure as a divine being, and therefore technically making Ankou (now Cadmus' Rest) a shrine world, Increasing the amount to be sent to the world via the Administatum for rebuilding efforts, and catapulting Jornaths importance as a cultural center beyond its already lofty heights in the sub-sector, potentially clinging to Casa Urients heels for Sub Sector Capital status years later The Sect Cadmusian has become an entrenched part of the pantheon of Imperial God heros within the Urient Sub Sector, the Bishopric of Cadmus' Rest established a military order about 60 years after the end of the 1st Jornathii Ork War, producing Crusaders for protection of Ecclessiarchy officials, as well as Guard officers, and Puritan Inquisitors. This order, is called the Miseracordia Jornathii officially, after the ubiquitous Custodians side arm. Their heraldry is that of the Akhelian Shield, being royal purple and gold. The Civitans Park where the last stand took place is preserved as it looked during the Liberation campaign, the body of Cadmus himself can be seen laying stricken atop the toppled Aquila, at the site of his death, though those in leadership are aware that his body is actually far away on distant Terra, and that the "corpse" on Ankou is actually a vat-grown flesh proxy clad in gold-tinted steel. The Akhelian Shield has on multiple occasions made its displeasure known about the deification of one of their fallen, and while the Ecclesiarchy has profusely apologized they have refused to issue a formal declaration of decanonization for Cadmus as it could spark a violent religious schism on or around Jornath

Hobby: Deciduous Tree Stands

Having moved house and started in earnest on working on a board for my own nefarious purposes, I obviously needed something to put on my burgeoning tablescape. I want the majority of things to be as versatile as possible for the moment, usable in a variety of scales and genres, which of course means revisiting the classics trees, hills, roads and streams.  To be fair the last time I even attempted some of these basics I was still in Middle and High School, so maybe I can put nearly a decade of accumulated knowledge to good use and create some woods that look at least partially like woodland.

Hobby: Fae Enchantress

Hello everyone! I'm hard at work on a wealth of new Jornath content that will help to contextualize the latest rather extreme lore update for the campaign and bring it more firmly into the realm of realistic feasibility. In the meantime, here is a sampling of the latest commission work that I've had the pleasure of doing. For another member of the Age of Sigmar league, I had the enormous good luck to paint a Bretonnian Fae Enchantress, and create a flight base for an already painted Pegasus Knight. I hope you enjoy!

Hobby: Gretchin #1

Hey everyone, just posting up some photos of a few greenskin ankle bitters for you to look at. Nothing particularly mind-blowing in terms of scheme or presentation, but from a purely technical level I'm happy with the result.

Hobby: STC Ruins

I recently picked up the STC Ruins set of terrain from the local GW store, and was very impressed by the results. The set provides quite a bit of table coverage, has good detail on all the wall sections and can be utilized in conjunction with the "classic" cities of death kits to make a very interesting bit of terrain.

For mine, I went with a pretty simple scheme of a weathered and rusted out grey color, which meant that the whole set could be painted in the space of a single afternoon. Resulting in a sizeable amount of (painted) table coverage in a handful of hours for a few dollars. Not half bad.

Hobby: DnD Dragonborn

A few weeks back my friend Chris, of Sippin' on Paint Water fame, and now Lord and Commander of the blogs Gloria in Morte and Upon the Muster Field, were browsing around the LGS and he challenged me to a friendly painting competition of some of the pre-primed D&D miniatures. Here are the results!

First up is my rusty dragon knight, very fashionable in this seasons shade of green cloak

And Next up is Chris' gleaming cold-blooded paragon of faith and fury. Hefting a lovely political statement about how he feels with regards to endangered species as a shield.

Jornath: Vengence of Medusa

This is the third in a series of narrative battle reports following the actions of the Sons of Medusa as they hunt down the Ork Warboss/Mek known as Oilymaw. for the first story click HERE and for the second click HERE

Corporis wiped the blood out of his eyes that was flowing out of the recent cut on his face, his helmet lost in the marshy streets of the Ork scrap cities. He took a deep breath of the chill coastal air, it smelled of salt and gunpowder. The rest of the strike force was beginning to rally around him now, save for a handful that had stayed behind to aid the Mechanicus's exfiltration from the target area, the distant sound of which still drifted across the city.

They had used the Skitarii as a diversion, drawing more of the Ork population away from them while they gave chase after Oilymaw and his bodyguard. The scrap city proved to be extremely hostile even with this distraction, however as throngs of scattered Orks rallied to Nobz and warriors sporting particularly extravagant firearms appeared to harray them. The fact that they were Astartes seemed to compound the issue, the aliens love a hard fight and the reputation of the Space Marines was such amongst these creatures that many eagerly threw themselves into battle.

Many brothers were wounded in both the initial attack on the observatory, and in the chase to cut the target off from escape. But failure now would only build Oilymaw's reputation to insane heights...he must die.

Looking up, Corporis could see the hundreds of bounding greenskin soldiers a few blocks away.

"Brother-Captain. I have arrived." boomed the voice of Ancient Castellax over the vox network. The mighty pounding feet of the venerable war-walker could be heard coming down the craggy defilade on the other side of the clearing, the other members of the reserve teams fanning out before it to meet the onrushing aliens.

Brother Tullus pulled back the control stick, banking his Thunderhawk Gunship steeply to the right, to avoid a trio of Ork dumb-fire rockets. He turned to see that the last Stormtalon had finished offloading the remainder of the strike force's reserve teams. As the craft ascended into a high orbit of the operations area, Tullus toggled the strike force vox net. "All teams are landed Brother-Captain.  Aliens are within 400 and closing to your location."

Corporis acknowledged the reports and immediately set about giving his final adjustments to the defense. "Pugno and Aerea neutralize the flanks of the retinue. Rubro you and your Hellblasters must find good choke points in the buildings. If you see the target, obliterate it with overwhelming fire.

Rubro cautiously moved through the facility. a crisscross of broken hallways, pipework and a latticed canopy of electrical wiring lit in an array of vibrant hues by the sunset and iridescent blue glow of his squad's plasma guns. The cracks of the flanking squads' fire echoed at odd angles through the shattered complex.  But under the noise, Rubro could hear something else.

In the stories above his squad, he saw just the faintest amount of movement.
"GRETCHIN!" he voxed to his squad.
Moments later accurate fire rained down from the pipes, ducts. Sparks and pieces of shrapnel exploded off the armor of the Hellblasters. The squads return fire, however, was exponentially more violent. A dozen bolts of star gas seared through the pipework into the gretchin's firing positions.  molten plastcrete dripped down from on high and the room fell back to quiet once more

Rubro lowered his plasma pistol and looked around to check the safety of his squad. The haze of gunsmoke and steam was only barely clearing, but through it, all of his brothers still stood. slowly becoming more at ease after the sudden assault. Outside the intensity of the firing picked up.

Suddenly the blast door along the opposite side of the building was smashed open, flooding the smoke-filled interior with a wash of sound and light. Nearly three dozen Ork warriors poured through the new opening.  They didn't immediately see Rubro and his squad through the dim light and heavy smoke, but the Astartes could see them plainly. Almost half the beasts were incinerated with ultra hot plasma in seconds, many of the remainders fled back outside. Leaving only a handful of others, brutish massive creatures silhouetted in the dying light, their glowering yellow eyes piercing in the darkness.

The tallest bellowed a horrendous guttural scream and came thundering toward Rubro. "Focus your fire!" he commanded.  The warboss was engulfed in plasma fire, igniting its body in a stupendous conflagration as its legs and lower torso liquified into a bloody puddle under it. The battlecry turned to one of unbearable agony, before falling silent.

Pugno was knocked back by the sheer weight of bodies rushing over the pipeline. He emptied his magazine into the broad front of the greenskins and pulled out a combat blade, parrying a blow from one Ork with the armor of his right wrist, and ramming the knife into the beast's throat. Ancient Castellax, turned his servo's protesting loudly due to the damage they had sustained in the fighting. The vox on his front barking to life.

"Down Brother!"

A hail of bolter rounds roared out of the Onslaught cannons affixed to the Dreadnaughts blessed hull. The fire scythed down the alien's latest charge. But still more milled around on the outskirts of buildings, gathering their courage before they attempted another try. Pugno quickly gathered himself to his feet and looked around to his brothers. Many in the squad were severely injured, Pumark, however, laid motionless beneath a duo of greenskins.  His suit's vitals still reading faintly on the squad leader's telemetry.  Pugno ran over to his fallen brother, pulling him out from under the dead aliens.  A muffled grunt came through Pumark's vox grill,  he started to ask the marine if he could still stand when he was interrupted by the strike force vox bursting to life.

"HVT eliminated Brother-Captain. Squad Rubro is withdrawing to exfiltration point."

"Understood. All Squads withdraw. Thunderhawks will provide cover for the breakaway."

Pugno and Aueternus, lifted the stricken Pumark into the back of the Thunderhawk as a hailstorm of boltfire poured into the buildings behind them. Orks were still milling around the area, but they had done what they'd come for.

As the gunship lifted into the air the strike force vox opened once more.

"Brothers, you have all done well this day. But I must ask more of you. The force's defending the Fortress Behras are calling for priority reinforcement. No other assets may be brought to bear, therefore it falls to us to stymie the green tide."

Pugno looked around at his squad, their armor was pockmarked with the craters from hundreds of munitions impacts, the luminous green of their heraldry smeared almost black with Ork blood, ash, and mud.  He said a silent prayer to the Emperor, and set the squad looking for any ammunition that might still be stored in the gunships hold.

Oilymaw laid in the darkness of the ruined factory. Looking skyward into the nest of pipes and cables, his entire being was pain. A particularly unfortunate side effect of his species immense constitution was that it took many minutes to die from blood loss.  Groggily he attempted to look around the room, to move his arms or legs. but was unable.

He heard a distant rattle, but couldn't concentrate his thoughts enough to understand what was making it or from where it came. His own bull-headed struggle to do so rocketed his mind back into unconsciousness.

The gentle clicking of hundreds of bones heralded the arrival of the Weirdboy and his throng of snakebites. He breathed in deeply.

"Dis one is blessed by Gorkamorka. Hunted by da mega umies he has past frew da green. Into da black"

leaning hard on a staff made of Imperial chainswords, the shaman bent over the burnt form of Oilymaw. His flesh charred, his limbs annihilated into cauterized stumps. He softly began to chant. The words spreading across the rest of the nearby orks.

"Into da Black"

From beneath the bodies of the many slain Orks a green fog appeared, clinging low to the ground like a blanket of etheral snow. As the fog built in density so too did the feverish chanting of the gathered aliens, until it had reached a manic climax. The fog began to crackle and pop with arcing electricity. Gathering thick around the body of Oilymaw.

In a sharp sudden instant the chanting stopped, the lightning ended and the fog disappeared.

Oilymaw's eyes shot open, his chest heaved violently as life poured back into him.  Above him stood an Ork covered in furs and dozens of lanyards of fetishes and trinkets. Its eyes thickly outlined in tar and blood.

"Wez welcome uz back. Oilymaw Da Black!" the weirdboy cackled.

"Ur pick up da boss. Wez got to go see Da painboyz"

A massive greenskin beast moved over to Oilymaw with a grunt. and hoisted him out of the puddle of his own flesh, lashing him quickly to his chest with bits of electrical wiring from the nearby wall. Ur grunted the completion of his task, and the throng of Orks began on their way.

Fictional Histories: Christopher Hollowell

Fictional Histories is a Fine Art project that seeks to analyze the world of tabletop gaming and looks to use the voice of the hobby to tell the stories of the men and women who engage in the hobby community. This work was among 4 others that were displayed at the Gatewood Gallery in May of 2017.

This is the third of those pieces presented in the show, here showcasing an interview with one of my long time friends and opponents Chris formerly from "Sippin' on Paint Water" now contributing to the blog-o-sphere through Gloria in Morte. Chris is a skilled painter and modeler, the resident "how did you paint that?!!" guy of the group so to say, it's not uncommon to see intricate unit badges on the sleeves of 15mm soldiers, or to look at his host of carefully converted Death Guard with horrifying disgust. While his recent move has taken his forces appearance on the blog to a reduced regularity, we still find time on occasion to throw tiny plastic warriors into pitched battles. When I talked to him about the most memorable moment in gaming for him he pointed more towards a time period, a stretch of time around the release of 6th edition 40k, that spanned around a year where the group of us began entering into the 15mm generic sci-fi scene. I chose to capture that time period by looking at one of the absolute earliest battles between the two of us, the Battle for Sellas.

Christopher Hollowell

I can't speak to any one person's reasons for playing a tabletop game, or becoming more involved in a wargaming community. I do think that it has something to do with a sense of camaraderie or  shared interest in a creative outlet. I think it's good in general, more people means more money in the hobby, a broader variety of interests to fuel the hobby's expansion. I think we'll see more and different ways that people choose to integrate it into their interactions with others, especially in a digital way.

I've had some long term projects, I've had large projects, but I think the single best gaming experience had to be when I started into 15mm sci-fi as a genre of interest. It's got less to do with science fiction and collecting lots of cool and affordable miniatures, and more to do with my exploration of that community as a digital presence and in a more real way with my close friends who started into that process at the same time. It allowed me to experience it as an individual, as part of a small group and with a sense of belonging to a sort of hobby diaspora.

so you would say like the PGCC and the stuff we did as part of that rush in the beginning was more rewarding because it was entirely our thing. like because it was crafted entirely from our small group it held more significance than it would have if we had moved from mainline 40k play to like infinity or something

Yes, not because the bigger games lack value, or good game design, but more because there is a certain amount of organic enthusiasm and creativity in something that is less polished. 15mm sci-fi is more of a sandbox setting for gaming, there are rules but no one set is king, there are great minis but the companies that make them don't have add budgets or marketing just a product that gets people excited and wanting to share it with folks who like it as much as they do. It might not be the best formula for long term success, but it is earnest and engaging in a way that something more established can't be.

Fictional Histories: Jonathan Hedgecock

Fictional Histories is a Fine Art project that seeks to analyze the world of tabletop gaming and looks to use the voice of the hobby to tell the stories of the men and women who engage in the hobby community. This work was among 4 others that were displayed at the Gatewood Gallery in May of 2017.

This is the first post of those 4 pieces that features an interview with my long time vengeful opponent JD. Whose forces featured in the Road to Orleans campaign, as well as the Siege of Lychke, and many others. Presented below is the interview and photos from his diorama.

JD Hedgecock

“What tabletop games do you play and how often?”
I play Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons and things of that nature, multiple times a week

“What is the most memorable thing to happen to you during a tabletop game?”
I and my friend Aaron, were playing a set of rules called Valor Steel & Flesh, and it was between two characters that we had created within the game, and through just sort of the random chance of the dice these two characters had become rivals. Well in one of the games, there two characters met on their own outside of their units above this hellish carnage. It was a really cool moment because it was just this really cool moment that came  about through the rules and through just talking outside of that. It was very cool because it was just this sort of collaborative story that happened very naturally.

“Can you tell me more about the lore, setting and context of the game you were playing during that memorable event?”
The setting I think was an extrapolation of the 100 years war, that we took and expanded out into the victorian age, and gave everyone magic and steampunk tech.  He was playing the British, and I was playing the French.

“Can you tell me about the character/s you were playing or that participated in that event”
One of them was Commander Bosch, which was mine who, felt that he could change the course of the war by gaining enough prestige and momentum through success in the army to eventually usurp the government and bring the fighting to a halt. The other was Captain Teague, who was under Aaron’s command, he was also very prideful and nationalistic but i don’t really recall too much else

“What do you think the upswing in the number of people playing tabletop games, both in person and online means,
in social terms?”
I think that people are looking to find more common ground between themselves, I think that areas of creation, of sports and games. You get all of these things in Tabletop gaming, the creation arts, the camaraderie and competition of sports, and i think that all of those things harbor the feelings people are really looking for.
