Siege of Lychke. Assault on COC Firelight

At the height of the battle, with the twinkling of the Fleets battling in orbit above me.
The roaring firestorm of the SecMass offensive, massacring my friends around me.
I finally understood the ancient phrase "There are no atheists in foxholes".
For all the teachings of society and politic, I had come to the religion of war.
Been baptized in the holy waters of oil and blood.
In the martyrdom of my comrades, I was born anew,
A Prophet of War.

- Cpl. Alych Gomez.  Survivor of the Siege of Lychke,
later interred in the Opalheart Advanced Care Facility for severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Sector: Lychke Military District [ 2 km from City Center ]

Strategic Situation: The Gray Knight, with newly arrived corporate fleet assets has begun engaging the Conclave and Provisional Fleet blockade. Coinciding, with a large scale combined arms attack by SecMass ground elements on the Orbital Defense guns, specifically  COC Firelight,  which controls the largest cluster of defense guns.  The 5th CMI Mechanized Brigade holds the position, and is exhausted, having fought much of the Siege. However, the grav tanks of the corporate army, have allowed them to encircle these beleaguered souls, separating them from the 10th Scout, and 3rd Prov. Infantry Regiment. by about three blocks.   Some reinforcements from these two regiments did reach the 5th to bolster these critical positions. But they may not be enough.

Tactical Situation: A Bolstered Platoon of the 5th Mechanized is situated in prepared defenses around COC Firelight,  with defense centered around the main control station. A Grav mounted Scout team from the 10th, just made it to the AO, before the encirclement.  Their new CGS-1 may prove invaluable. The Infantry are backed up by several CT-8's  and a CT-7 MLRS variant. SecMass is launching their assault with heavy grav tanks, and large groups of corporate infantry.

Layout of COC Firelight, the green circle representing the fire control center, and arrows representing corridor of approach.

The only asset of the 10th to get to COC Firelight before its encirclement this gravmech grenadier squad represents the pinnacle of Conclave training and weapons technology.

Exhausted recruit squads fight tenaciously from their positions, dealing a good toll on the approaching Corporate troops,  the CT-8's  deal an avalanche of 40mm autocannon hits on the SecMass tanks reducing their effectiveness, but not destroying them.

The Grenadiers secure the southern gun battery, as the recruits in the west, east and north die for every inch of the gun battery

The CT-7 MLRS launches the first of its limited stockpile of missiles into the Corporate infantry, and the entire assortment of Conclave vehicles pour lead and fire in behind.  The slog across the marshlands into the hard cover of the city is proving slow, and while many die; the corporate soldiers (either through raw mettle or as a result of fanatical indoctrination) continue to push into the COC.

A larger overview of the last shot.

An elite squad of Corporate stormtroopers, makes it across the killing ground and rips into the western recruits.

A view from one of the western squads, towards a SecMass MRAP.  These men would fight from this position for the entirety of the engagement.

A view of the Corporate forces as they wade into the position,  for much of the early stages, they had a very difficult time coordinating their attack, either due to enemy fire or disruption brought about by the fleet battle above.

But, soon they begin to mass behind a small housing complex, and a large rush of troops into the central command station seems imminent.

Corporate Squads finally arrive and silence the northern gun. immediately setting about establishing their own terminals to use it against the Conclave fleet.

Also in the north, SecMass vehicles blaze down the main highway, but it is critically disabled by the fire of all the north defenses. The crew bailout of their shattered hulk, casually walking back to their lines, with the cover of a company of SecMass Marines.

The crew of the MRAP, controlling an assualt drone to try and break through the western defense

The firefight between the infantry is interrupted by the divert of the CGS-1, which uses its mobility to spray a few bursts of large caliber machine gun fire into the Stormtroopers, before returning the help the eastern line.

Recruit Corporal Mal Cezarno, rallying his squad at the climax of the battle, as SecMass Marines charge across the road into the trenchlines.

A view from the defenses as the marines charge.

An image of the forces on the west and north defenses as they are met with a brutal SecMass charge.

The surviving Corporate Stormtroopers cut into the eastern recruit squads.  The melee would last the rest of the engagement.  Nearly all the recruits would give their lives to hold the western line.

As the marines begin to move, an Autocannon round rips the lead soldier in half, suppressing the squad and halting the charge.

But the corporate MAT has their own rebut

Which has potent and deadly effect,  but their actions proved to late.  The CGS-1 is able to catch the charging Marines in the open, cutting them down in the street along with heavy fire from the Recruits. causing the attack to falter and eventually sputter out.

In the end. One CT-8 burns, another sits, its crew half dead, its workings all but shattered,  The CT-7 is out of ammunition,  many recruits are dead or wounded, either of heat exhaustion or enemy fire. The CGS-1 patrols the perimeter of piled corporate bodies and empty hulks of fire licked corporate tanks. The guns of COC Firelight were held, by only the slimiest of margins.  Skirmishing around the battery would continue for several days, until the APA reached the position.

In the end, the guns would mean that the Corporate fleet could not land more soldiers. But no grand victory was won. the Siege of Lychke was over for the moment, but the Campaign of Lychke Province had only begun...

Col.Uriah Merda. Commander Yurien 3rd

Colonel. Merda,  known also as "Rust's Bulldog."  Is a older man,  of 52 years,  and one of Antilo Rust's most tenacious, and senior of Army Group Commanders. He is vicious, known for lightning quick armored offensives and the liberal application of Mechanized Infantry assets.

As a young man, Uriah Merda was a fiercely independent member of "The Brass Hegemony" a volatile economic sect of the Imperial Government on the Hive World of Cauldron's Gate. There he was responsible for overseeing the discipline and punishment of illegal mutant slave laborers, that provided much of the workforce for the Hegemony's obscenely high product quota. Cauldron's Gate, was eventually shifted into the zone of reinforcement for the Astra Militarium war against Orc Pirates in the sub sector.  Merda's, natural talents as a disciplinarian proved very helpful for his career, and he was placed in the 4th Cauldron Infantry's regimental command staff as an adjunct Commissar.

In his tenure with the 4th, he learned the trade of the political officer, and soon relished the work, putting the fire of battle and will to succeed into the hearts of the infantrymen under his direction.  After nearly a decade in service with his home regiment. Merda was given the rare promotion to the rank of full Commissar, by his mentor, and was to be transferred to a special Schola in the Segmentum Solar for indoctrination of the just right of Imperial Law.   However, as is sometimes the case with the Departmento Munitorum, he was prematurely transferred to the 3rd Yurien Regiment as a Senior Political Officer, to assist with the Cyrian Civil War.

Upon making planetfall on the dusty flats on Yuria. Merda, assisted for sometime in small scale anti guerrilla operations, becoming familiar with the mechanized blitz tactics of the tankers.  Eventually, late in the war, only a few months before the Pilgrims would arrive and liberate the world.   The Governor issued  Edict 001,  to all loyalist regiments,   the systematic annihilation of all resistance units, their families, their families relations, and those relations' relations.   When the 3rd heard of this, their fury and outrage was absolute, armed terrorists was one thing, but few had been prepared to enact a full purge. Loyalties were tested, and it looked like even the PDF would rip itself apart.  Merda, spent much of this time brooding, thinking about his true place.  He decided, that the only proper thing to maintain discipline in the regiment would be to execute the acting Colonel Tamhander,  and place the regiment in a state of total neutrality until the wars end.

The 3rd, would be encountered at the central Tram station, holding off the 2nd Yurien "Loyalists" by the 11th Rallen. The stress, and lapse of imperial law, had let the temptations of Chaos slip in, and the 3rd were just starting to build bloody alters to Al'shata Kharone (The Blessed War Father).  Merda acting as their defiant new Colonel.

Soon, Merda, would be promoted to the rank of Lex Commandat in the Pilgrims,  and be in command of the entire 2nd Army Group, some 1.8 Million Souls.  but for all the titles of distinction, he chooses to be called Colonel and thinks it more "homely" and "down to earth".   While he spends a lot more time in command rooms, and briefings than he would like, Merda still finds plenty of excuses to extol great feats of courage, and fight alongside his "Tough Bloody Boys" .

15mm Imperial Fist Tac. Marine

Hey all, the Orion Heavy Infantry from Blue Moon arrived the other week, along with some necessary Westarc minis.   I've tried my hardest to replicate a space marine in this scale, let me know your thoughts,  i plan on bulking up his legs.  I also have a platoon of British FV432's that will serve as Razorbacks.

yesterday, i had a whole gang of guys over for a minis' day.  Owen, JD, and newcomer Kaleb,   we worked on 15mm Sci-fi,  played a small skirmish with those,  myself and JD played a 1500 point Orc v WoC battle in WFB,  and there was a lot of talking about possible manufacturers for Orks, Dark Eldar, and Tau for 15mm 40k.  Hopefully we may soon see several Ork Units WAAAAGHING across the games table.

The one on the far right was done by Chris.

The War for Megnara (15mm 40k)

Segmentum Tempestus
Sub Sector Novara
Imperial World.

Synopsis: Megnara is of a mixed temperate, and is covered predominantly in forests and high rocky mountain areas.  Tracts of the south western hemisphere are given over to rich agricultural facilities,  and in the entirety of the north breaks into vast tundra and immensely deep ravines (some nearly a kilometer deep) that present rich mineral veins, and hot springs.   The planetary capital , and the only hive city, is  The Glisterbrug  {ja-glis-tur-barg} which rests in the idyllic “valley of pastels”.  The Planet is governed by Primadon, Quinn Vanders,  and sustains a local PDF garrison of  15 Regiments, positioned evenly across the planet.   Its primary exports are lumber, and mineral ore,  it has a relatively low tithe rate for the Adeptus Munitorum, as the Sub-Sector has been spared much conflict.

Situation: An unidentified force of Chaos Renegades, has landed in the planets Southeastern Hemisphere, and spread heretical teachings amid the populace.   The Megnarian PDF 8th and 11th Regiments are holding the Cultists and Renegade Militia at bay at several key cities and industrial complexes.  Estimated casualties are 250,000 and are primarily civilians.   The remaining Megnarian PDF regiments are marching to the hot zone but are several weeks out, as they lack sufficient vehicle transports.  A Flotilla of Chaos vessels hangs in orbit, above the hot zone, but is under sustained pressure of the local Naval command.

Order of Battle:

Imperial Fists 5th Company.

Cadian 157th
Cadian 109th
Mordian 116th
Elter’s World 90th
Elter’s World 91st

Plan of Assault:  The Imperial Fists will deploy among the Regiments of the Imperial Guard, to supplement their forces during stage 1 of the ground operations.  Upon arriving planetside, Imperial troops will assist the 8th and 11th Megnarian in holding the line, until the rest of the PDF arrive.  Once this occurs, the fresh PDF will be subsumed into Imperial Ground Command and all forces, save for the 8th, 11th, and 1st Megnarian,  and the Elter’s World 90th, will push the frontline forward 10km to “Phaseline Alpha”.

Once the push has properly tested the Chaos forces capabilities and located positions of Strength, the Imperial Fists will rejoin and attack en mass at these traitor fortifications.  This method of pushing, and surgical strikes will repeat until Chaos forces have been obliterated, somewhere around  Vurde {Ver-du}.

Rules of Engagement:
Civilians within the Hot Zone are to be considered tainted,  and eliminated where discovered.

The taking of captives will be acceptable only during the stage 1 push, to analyze enemy force composition and gather Intelligence.

I'm still thinking about what Chaos force i want to use, i think i will have it bolstered by a small contingent of Chaos Space Marines. I also don't think i want to use the Pilgrims of Rust, just to shake things up a little.

Imperial Fists Scout in 15mm

Being the negative influence that I am, i was able to talk my buddy Chris into building and painting 40k stuff in 15mm.   The intention of this will be to represent what we consider "realistic" engagements in the setting.  So long range tank fights and a variety of more true to form operations.   I've got an idea for a battlefield that I think might be enjoyable in the Segmentum Tempestus.

I've taken the bull by the horns this go around, in that i've taken up the challenge of making space marines.  While the mini's i plan on using for the Full-Brothers and Heros are in the mail. I've made a few scouts and a few chaos elements.  But for right now the only guy i've got painted his this one scout.

If you'd like to see Chris' ventures in this check them out ...   Here

If you want to see some truly inspiring 15mm 40k work you need to see Gunners Wargaming Blog

and also check out Pawn Cocktail for some neat Astra Tempestus Scions.

Thats all for right now.

The Story of Westarc (Part 4)

Debate raged over the merits of Planet 68 as ground teams scoured the LZ for any evidence of what had occurred in the night. No bodies had been discovered, but there was an abundance of blood, ash and bullet holes.  It was a patrol searching on the farthest limits of the facility at the edge of the ruins that discovered a broken wayteam drone, carrying a rather curious data-parcel.

Though it was garbled and difficult to understand a message spelled out an unexplained exodus from LZ Humanitie.

And a fierce firefight against contact referred to simply as "inconnu" or unknown.  A positioning blip link to a Wayteam helmet transponder ended the message.

Acting quickly on this new information Westarc Ground Command took control of the situation, immediately sending two mechanized units to the ground.  Named "Gothic" and "Typhoon"  these units would converge on the Wayteam with a war footing. Utilizing a small convoy of FSV34's team "Gothic" was to navigate the winding city streets and break through to the survivors, while "Typhoon"  with a medium range Gravitic mortar, would establish a temporary field outpost and triage station to the north of the transponder signal.

The units deployed quickly at the LZ, which would be held by the initial SAR units in the event the teams would need to fall back.

At 10:30 am, only twenty minutes after the discovery of the drone, Gothic and Typhoon set out on Operation: Inconnu

Though it was not known then,  the next few hours would decide the fate of the entire Arc, and lead to a conflict that might save the residue of mankind or lead us into damnation.

To be Continued...

The Road to Orleans: A Corpse Strewn Wasteland...

Unfortunately, i've not been posting with any sort of acceptable frequency.
However, i think this might be due in large part to Excessive backlog from a massive variety of unreported hobby-ing.     To remedy this dreadful situation now (and hopefully for good),  i'm bringing you a synopsis of the battles fought in mine and JD's blood filled VSF campaign.

The Sheer volume of content i fear might overwhelm,  so i'll be including the photos from the battles at the end (of course labelled accordingly)  with a run-down of the engagements and their tactical importance on the campaign as a whole below.

The Battle of Hyll-Grove

In an attempt to flank around Saints Hill, troops flood into Hyll-Grove, a massive mining and manufacturing plant, that has cracked open and polluted the french countryside, and is pumping out vast arms, and war material for the French Army. It is a nightmarish hellscape of massive grinding gears and great black factories,  but the worst of all is the secret powering the facility... The sickly bloated and mutated mining foreman,  grossly bloated with sludge and poison to the size of a large town, the necromancy and vile steam engineering of the Hyll-Grove facility is plugged directly into his nervous system...

The game centered around massed infantry combat (though a few vehicles were present),  with troops trying to seize vital areas of the plant.  We determined that as the facility took damage, through tank fire, off board support fire etc.  That it upset the overall stability of the facility, and potentially kill thousands of troops should it suffer a total failure.

Outcome:  Draw,   150 infantry KIA/WIA/MIA (estimated)   2 Heavy Vehicles,  and 2 Superheavies destroyed.    The Facility was forced to be evacuated by both sides,   the Death blow was delivered later that evening by the French Navy during a 24 hour Ceasefire, to ensure that the mutation beneath was not freed to wreak its sinister revenge. The fires ignited in the toxic marshlands adjacent are estimated to continue to burn until at least 1986....

The Duel at Saints Hill.

With a stalemate on their hands, it was decided that two noble gentlemen from either side would met at the top of the Hill Proper, and engage in a duel of honor.  The victors side would inherit the field and the other would withdraw no less than 25 km from the site.
And so it was that Captain Teague, and Captain Bosch meet in the blood stained courtyard of a broken cathedral....

Outcome:  Teague was victorious, but only barely,  with Bosch escaping with his life.  the British overtake the French lines withing a week and the battle for Orleans proper begins...

The Battle for the Damned City.

In a foolhardy move to out pace Lee's half of the campaign army and "steal the glory"  Cromwell, leads dozens of regiments into the haunted and zombie filled ruins of Old Orleans, beneath the Floating Neo city, that the objective has been all along. With the intention being to use it as a easily accessible location to sieze the lowest sections of the city.

The Le Bebop, made its first appearance in this battle, with it having severe limitations of course, to represent that Cromwell's  foolish rush had, made him neglect avoiding the French naval troops.

Outcome:  A Slaughter of British force,  nearly the entire assault force is obliterated.  Cromwell is captured, after the entirety of the 7th Dragoons are slain in his defense.  Teague and Matthews are both severely wounded and removed from the conflict for months at the minimum.  However in a spot of luck, Bosch is killed by Teague as the city exploded around them, leaving the RGC leaderless, and sending the French Rebels into immediate action.

The Minute that Shall Live In Infamy.

With Cromwell captured,  British high command had no choice but to exchange Vesuvius for him, in a humiliating turn of events for the (now former) Lord General.  Left as the only major English officer in the field Lee, orders his men to secure their foothold on a "Sky Village"  that connects to Orleans' central city platform via massive bridge.     The French Rebels took the confusion and disarray of the RGC to strike at the government,  as did The Young Prince, Vesuvias's bastard son, and leader of the German Army.  Through an incredibly calculating a murderous ploy,   Vesuvias lured his son, the British main force, and the French Rebels into the clamp struts for the sky bridge, where he detonated a twisted fusion of high technology and black magic.   Protecting himself and his son,  but shattering 1/4 of Orleans' super structure and ballast rig, and killing/mutating/or wounding hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians and combatants.

Outcome: With Vesuvias making the shattered and magically tainted remains of Orleans his dark capital.  He and his son preside over a massive host of bestial necrophages.  The English high command is totally shot, and those ground forces who survived are in disarray. The only hope for mankind lies with S.O.R.R.O.W.S  or the (Service for Observing Reconstruction and Reinforcement during Occult. Warfare Situations). A secret arm of the English government responsible for isolating and destroying occult threats specifically.

The 7th Fighting to the Last.

While i don't have pictures of the duel and the rather large and apocalyptic final explosion.  Rest assured that it was terrifying and the other members of my house looked on in concerned while both of us screamed "THEY ARE ALL DEAD!!!  EVERYONE IS DEAD!"
